Feeling
after Great Pain
After
great pain a formal feeling comes –
The
nerves sit ceremonious like tombs;
The
stiff Heart questions-
was it He that bore?
was it He that bore?
And
yesterday- or centuries before?
The
feet mechanical
Go
round a wooden way
Of
ground or air or Ought,
regardless grown,
regardless grown,
A
quartz contentment like a stone.
This
is the hour of lead
Remembered
if outlives,
As
freezing persons recollect the snow-
First
chill, then stupor,
then the letting go.
then the letting go.
Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)
This great pain from you has left me emotionless. I am feeling so numb
as if I am dead. This heart feels stone cold and rock heavy. I am standing
emotionless in a death ceremony. I have even lost the sense of time. I don’t even
remember weather it is new or old. Whether I suffered it yesterday or I am
bearing it since centuries.
Thinking of the pain you gave, my feet has turned wooden. My body has turned
into an emotionless machine just to carry the burden of mere existence.
Time has become as heavy as lead for me. It is so difficult to work
with it. I will never outlive this suffering. Certainly I will have to die
first to forget this great pain.
It is
like last snowfall, I was freezing, still tried to hold the snow (pain) in my
hands. First I felt the chill. Then my hands stopped feeling anything. Lastly I
realized I could not hold it and had to let it go.
