| Risk assessment of professionals against Corona Virus done by The New York Times Lazaro Gamio, published on 15 March 2020 (available at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/15/business/economy/coronavirus-worker-risk.html)
China, South Korea and Singapore have
amply demonstrated that this virus (COVID-19) is not eternal. It is also
perishable and its disease curable like many other human diseases. Prevention and protection is the answer
because all the above mentioned countries have controlled it by methods more sociological
than medical. They have already
controlled it while vaccine companies have not even started human trials. It
proves that although vaccine and medicines are inevitable but they are not the
only answer.
Coming back to ourselves. In twenty
first century India is claiming itself as a global power and wants entry in the
list of superpowers. Good governance is one of the principle indexes on which
the rating is done and judicial function by courts constitutes a large part of
that index. Constitutional Courts are first as well as last responders for
violation of rights and liberties of people. Constitutional courts are essential
function not only for the people but also for the state.
Empirical chart
published by Lazaro Gamio of The New York Times on 15 March 2020 optimistically
shows ‘lawyers’ as a very low risk category. Then why are we on leave? While
all other essential functionaries of the state are not only battling the virus
on the frontlines but also hitherto defeating it successfully, at least in India. Fortunately court
rooms do not even constitute the frontline in this battle. When police,
doctors, nurses, bankers, milkman, vegetable seller, grocery seller etc. can
fight this battle on the frontlines, headquarters can keep functioning
with bare precautions and preventive measures like physical distancing.
