DREAM-PEDLARY
If there were dreams to sell,
What would you buy?
Some cost a passing bell;
Some a light sigh,
That shakes from Life's fresh crown
Only a rose-leaf down.
If there were dreams to sell,
Merry and sad to tell,
And the crier rang the bell,
What would you buy?
A cottage lone and still,
Which bowers nigh,
Shadowy, my woes to still,
Until I die.
Such pearl from Life's fresh crown
Fain would I shake me down,
Were dreams to have at will,
This would best heal my ill,
This would I buy.
-Thomas Lovell Beddoes(1803-1849)
If someone comes to sell me a dream, what would I buy?
Some dreams may cost me even my life, others are as inexpensive as a sigh.
I would buy a lone cottage in the quite woods. Which will calm my worries with its stillness. I will gladly stay in that lonely cottage. I will have all my dreams there and heal my soul which is battered by the worldly worries.
That dream I will buy.
