Bench and Bar may have to be given equal footings, if our system wants to claim any modernity.
It is a
mistaken modernity to think that court rooms become modern by superimposition
of clumsy and outdated often dysfunctional desktop computers adjusted somehow on old wooden stools.
Serious lawyers are
still grappling with the relevancy of online court proceedings in grave and
ponderous court debates where more than a miscellany of orders is needed.
We become modern when
bar and its lawyers are given respect in court and freedom to plead and argue
without any sense of colonialism.

High podiums were
meant to give a sense of high and low to both sides. They were invented when
the concept of equality before law and equal status in courtrooms were in
nascent stage. Practice of equality may start from courtrooms designs by
ending the colonial legacy of high podiums.
The youngest Supreme
Court of the world have already deleted House of Lords and their High Podiums.
There are only judges, lawyers, and the law.
Elevations have been
replaced by Appointments. Petitions have been replaced by Forms, Prayers have
been replaced by Claims. Begging have been replaced by Arguments.
