Encroachment
on public land by public is certainly a bad thing!
Nothing can justify it.
After
the first flush of satisfaction of removal of encroachment, a disgusting
feeling comes to see the ugly sight of demolition of a poor man’s house.
Bunch of uniformed guys disguised under the draconian
power of state were feeling over proud after destructing huts and shacks of the
helpless.
However, the base question remained unanswered. How
did these people settle on the government land in the first place and allowed
to remain there for almost half a century? After all it was no outskirt of the
town. It was right in the middle of the city and all were having water and
electricity connections provided by the very state who branded them illegal now!
Obviously, when the state and its agencies were already actively involved in allowing such illegal settlements, they cannot be expected to have any answer.
The only other who could ask such questions were the courts.
But they chose not to ask. They are above any questioning.

| Demolition in Nainital |
Demolition without opportunity of rehabilitation sounds so apt for our police state. Alas! It does not hint of any welfare state in the making.
Finally, once again, State won and the people
lost.
